Marine Le Pen Faces Prison in Embezzlement Sentence

Following her conviction for embezzling EU funds to support her far-right party, Marine Le Pen was barred from running for public office by a French court.
Marine Le Pen has been banned from running for office for five years, effective immediately, by a French court. She is therefore ineligible to compete in the French presidential election of 2027.
In addition, she was sentenced to four years in prison, two of which will be suspended. Instead of being in custody, the other two can be spent with an electronic tag.
Additionally, Le Pen was fined €100,000 (£82,635). Marine Le Pen has been also sentenced to four years in prison. Two of which will be suspended, and is prohibited from seeking public office. However, it’s unclear if she will truly be imprisoned or subject to limitations like wearing an electronic tag. The allegations against Marine Le Pen revolve around the misuse of European Parliament funds.
She, alongside other members of her party, has been found guilty for using money intended for parliamentary assistants to pay staff who were actually working for the party in France, rather than on EU-related activities.
This alleged misuse of funds took place between 2004 and 2016. Throughout the trial, Le Pen has maintained her innocence. Arguing that the activities of the aides were legitimate and related to their roles as parliamentary assistants. She has positioned herself as a political target, claiming that the trial is an attempt to undermine her political career. This trial is a critical juncture for Marine Le Pen, as it not only threatens her political career but also impacts the future of the National Rally party. The outcome of this trial will be closely watched, given its potential to reshape the political landscape in France.
Rodolphe Bosselut, Le Pen’s lawyer, says that his client would appeal the sentence, so it is not going to be applied at this time.
