Transparency International: Corruption is Thriving All Over

Transparency International will release its 2024 Corruption Perceptions Index on Tuesday, 11 February 2025.
The Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) is the leading global indicator of public sector corruption, providing an annual comparative snapshot of 180 countries and territories.
The 2024 CPI edition assesses how countries have responded to corruption over time, reviewing progress and failures in the past year, while focusing particularly on how corruption is undermining climate action around the world.
The data highlights that many countries in dire need of climate finance are grappling with governance and corruption issues. Moreover, the fossil fuel industry’s undue influence is hindering wealthy nations from addressing climate change effectively. The 2023 Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) shows that corruption is thriving across the world. The CPI ranks 180 countries and territories around the globe by their perceived levels of public sector corruption, scoring on a scale of 0 (highly corrupt) to 100 (very clean). Over two-thirds of countries score below 50 out of 100, indicating severe corruption problems.
The global average score remains stagnant at 43, with most nations showing no progress or declining over the past decade.
Corruption, including bribery and abuse of power, is infiltrating courts and justice institutions worldwide. Where corruption is the norm, vulnerable populations face limited access to justice, while the wealthy and powerful dominate entire justice systems, undermining the common good.

In the coming weeks, Europe Unfiltered will showcase the results from 2024 and illustrate these with the most conspicuous news pieces.
