Senior EU Official Under Scrutiny in Suspicious Aviation Deal

The European Commission has launched disciplinary proceedings against Henrik Hololei over concerns about transparency, conflicts of interest, and gift acceptance.

Hololei, a former senior EU transport official, is accused of improperly exchanging confidential details about an aviation deal with Qatar in return for gifts, luxury stays, and insider privileges.

The EU’s fraud office, OLAF, investigated Hololei in 2023, finding evidence of misconduct and recommending disciplinary measures, leading to this latest Commission action. Since the findings, Hololei was reassigned to a lower-ranking role at the Directorate-General for International Partnerships, with a pay cut.

The disciplinary probe covers multiple alleged breaches, including unauthorized acceptance of gifts, conflict of interest violations, unauthorized document disclosure, and transparency failures in EU procedures.
If found guilty, Hololei could face penalties ranging from a written reprimand to job removal and reduction in pension payouts. French Socialist MEP Chloé Ridel criticized the Commission for failing to suspend the EU-Qatar aviation deal, calling the refusal “bold” amid widespread mistrust in EU institutions. EU prosecutors are actively interviewing Commission officials regarding vaccine procurement transparency, further piling pressure on the institution’s accountability. Corruption allegations have surfaced across EU institutions recently, fueling skepticism about regulatory oversight.
Public trust in EU institutions is fragile, and cases like this only heighten concerns over ethics in leadership.
